Conversion of Listed Building into Apartments, Cathedral Court, Chelmsford

Client: Blakes Countrywide Ltd

Cathedral Court is the result of collaboration with our client to restore and creatively extend a former magistrates court originally designed by renowned Essex Architect Frederic Chancellor. We resolved the internal planning issues to insert 7 apartments into the existing structure with contemporary extensions to the rear, providing amenity terraces to the penthouse apartment, which occupies the top two floors of the building. The practice worked with the local authority in this conservation area to develop a complementary language for the new insertions using a palette of Trespa panels and diamond pattern zinc panels.
